If you’re like me—addicted to fashion but not so thrilled about fast fashion prices or environmental waste—then platforms like Depop and Vinted are probably your go-to spots. Over the past two years, I’ve transformed my wardrobe by thrifting on these two secondhand marketplaces, and I’ve picked up some game-changing strategies along the way.
1. Use Specific Keywords When Searching
Instead of typing vague terms like “cute dress,” I search for “Reformation linen wrap dress” or “Y2K low-rise cargo pants.” The more specific you are—brand, style, color, fabric—the more relevant your results. Bonus: add the size and condition (“like new”) to narrow it further.
2. Save Your Favorite Searches
Both Vinted and Depop let you save searches and even enable alerts. I set up saved searches for brands I love (like COS, Ganni, and Acne Studios), and I get notified the moment something new is listed.
3. Don’t Be Afraid to Haggle (Politely!)
I used to feel awkward about negotiating, but sellers expect it. On Depop, I usually offer 10–15% less than the asking price and include a friendly message like, “Hey! Would you consider £22 for this? Totally understand if not :)” On Vinted, it’s even easier with the built-in offer button.
4. Check Seller Ratings and Reviews
Before buying, I always scroll through seller feedback. If a seller has lots of reviews mentioning “slow shipping” or “item not as described,” I skip. On the flip side, when a seller is praised for being communicative and fast, it gives me peace of mind.
5. Read Descriptions Thoroughly
Sounds obvious, but I’ve been burned by skimming. Once I bought a “blazer” that turned out to be a cropped vest because I didn’t notice “no sleeves” in the description. Lesson learned: check condition, fabric, measurements, and whether returns are accepted.
6. Zoom in on Photos
Zoom. Every. Time. I’ve spotted tiny flaws—snags, missing buttons, or discoloration—that weren’t mentioned in the description. If I’m unsure, I just message the seller for more photos. It’s better than receiving an unwelcome surprise.
7. Bundle to Save on Shipping
On Vinted especially, bundling is a win-win. A lot of sellers are happy to offer a better deal if you're interested in more than one item from their shop—just ask politely, and you might get a nice little discount or save on shipping. I usually check what else a seller is offering and ask if they can combine shipping or offer a better price. It’s how I scored a three-piece linen set for under €20.
8. Time Your Shopping Right
I’ve noticed that listings spike during weekends and holidays—probably when people are decluttering. I often browse on Sunday evenings or after major holidays like New Year’s or spring break. More listings = more gems to discover.
9. Follow Sellers With Your Style
When I find a seller whose taste matches mine, I follow them. Many post regularly, and some even offer first dibs or private sales to followers. I’ve had sellers message me directly before uploading something, and that’s how I got a vintage Ralph Lauren coat for €35.
10. Think Long-Term, Not Just Trendy
It’s tempting to go after whatever’s trending on TikTok, but I always pause and ask: “Will I wear this next season?” The best finds are timeless—like my black leather loafers from Vagabond or a classic wool trench that I’ll wear for years. Shopping secondhand gives you access to quality that often outlasts fast fashion fads.
Every item has a story, and I love knowing my clothes have lived previous lives. Plus, it feels good to make more conscious choices for the planet. I hope these tips help you navigate the treasure hunt of secondhand shopping and score some amazing pieces that truly feel like you.
